Generally winter brings cold and an abundance of chemicals on side walks, drive ways and surfaces. The cold can burn their pads, as well as Chemical burns. Vaseline can help on the pads before going out.  In situations where avoiding is not possible, duct tape a plastic bag on each foot and leg.  take off after the issue resolves or risk passes.  Remember cold burns can be very damaging. If you live in areas of severe weather consider investing in booties for you and your dog :)
